Laurie Simmons & Lena Dunham: An Online Screening and Conversation on “The Music of Regret” - Join us for a benefit Zoom event featuring Laurie Simmons in conversation with her daughter, Lena Dunham. We’ll begin with a screening of Laurie’s film The Music of Regret, featuring Meryl Streep and The Alvin Ailey Dancers, and conclude with a question and answer session with Laurie and Lena. A deeply personal film, Simmons employs dolls, custom made ventriloquist’s dummies, and animated objects to act, dance, and sing about love, interpersonal dynamics, problems with neighbors, and of course, regret. The film has only been released intermittently since its premiere at MoMA in 2006. Known primarily as a visual artist prior to making this film, Simmons also wrote all the lyrics, which were set to music by Michael Rohatyn. They range in style from American Songbook to Hawaiian ukulele serenades and are sung by Meryl Streep and Adam Guettel. The dancing objects scenes were performed by The Alvin Ailey II dancers. Registration is required for this Zoom event. The fee is $20 per household/computer.

Laurie Simmons’s The Music of Regret | MoMA - Film series. May 24–29, 2006. The Music of Regret. 2006. USA. Directed by Laurie Simmons. Cinematography by Ed Lachman. Music by Michael Rohatyn. Produced by Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, Donald Rosenfeld, Salon 94, and Performa with RoseLee Goldberg. Associate produced by Fabienne Stephan. A mini-musical in three acts, this 35mm film grew out of distinct periods in Simmons’s photographic work. Vintage child-craft puppets enact the pain and regret that erupt between two feuding families. A female ventriloquist dummy sings about the failures of attachment and communication to her six dummy suitors. Walking objects—including a gun, a house, and a pocket watch—dance their hearts out in order to be noticed. 40 min. World premiere.
